The Power of Cold Water Swimming
Cornish Kelpie began as a love for the sea and a belief that cold-water swimming can change lives. Over the past six years, that belief has grown into a welcoming, vibrant community across Cornwall — swimmers of all ages and abilities coming together to enjoy the thrill, health benefits and companionship that open-water swimming offers. Our approach is simple: create safe, inclusive spaces where people can learn, improve and feel supported. I’m a STA Level 2 Open Water Swimming Coach and a qualified Outdoor First Aider, and I also serve as an RNLI Water Safety Adviser. Those qualifications guide how we run weekly swims, technique-focused sessions and coached group training, so every swimmer can progress with confidence. Beyond regular coaching, Cornish Kelpie organises holidays, retreats, workshops and community events that celebrate sea swimming and strengthen connections. In March 2024, I had the honour of competing at the Winter Swimming World Championship in Tallinn, where sea temperatures fell to around 0.2°C. It was an unforgettable experience — I achieved personal bests. In January 2025 I was humbled to be named Inspirational Woman of the Year by the Inspiring Women’s Network — a recognition that means the world because it came from this community. In November 2025, we launched the Cornish Swim Festival to bring our entire community together. The inaugural event at Trevassack Lake, run with the Children’s Sailing Trust, was a wonderful success, and we’re already planning for 2026. Cornish Kelpie is about more than swimming — it’s about wellbeing, friendship, resilience and having fun. I’m proud to run this as a family-minded venture (my husband Sam and our children are my biggest supporters), and I’m excited to welcome anyone curious about sea swimming — whether you want to try your first dip or join a seasoned group. Come for the cold, stay for the community.
